lets breath a little now shall we?

Well this week as been hectic in a way I don't think I have been hectice sense well, in a long time!!

Last night I had a little fit, and pouted about how if one more thing came up I would scream! Normally I plan NOTHING, as in each and every night I have nothing to do but whatever I want to do!

This week I have had a plan each night, mainly including quilting and sometimes involving a trip to the mall. For example I need to go to the mall before I see my prego (short for pregnant) friend. I want to get her something nice for HER, and also nice wrappings for the baby blanket.

Well I have had nearly 3 meetings every day, and been half a day behind in all my work. Amazingly I just caught up, and it's only 5:30!! I am happy, almost...

So I had left it till thursday to go to the mall (probably not the wisest thing) and of course now I have a 5 - 6pm meeting tommorow night!! GAH! Will I have time to go to the mall AND complete any last minute quilting?? Not to mention the fact I have a meeting friday and I PRAY the person doesn't want any changes to our designs so I don't have to worry about catching my plane.

AM I MAD?? I probably am, but what I have learned is, never again quilt with a deadline. NEVER AGAIN! Seriously. I have made more mistakes then I have wanted to, however the COMPLETED top looks great! I finished last night, and then did a test applique. It says to wash all fabric BEFORE but I can't with this!! I need to not so it will get all wrinkly whhen it shrinks!! So the test came out SO-SO. I need to make VERY sure that I iron the edges (one side was missed) and the machine sewing around the outside, well I am not good enough with a machine. So I plan on doing some sort of hand embroidered thing that sort overlaps the whole edge, because the edge does sorta look rough at some parts so I want to mask that.

So here is to another long night!!! Oh and I forgot to get my mom's address to mail her the scarf and birthday card. I have no idea if I will have time before I lease!! Maybe I'll just take it to NC and mail it from there on saturday, then it will only have half the distance to go!!

I'm gonna go relax in a bath before I hit the quilting. I need to iron on the 3 stars, and emroider them. I would like to start the quilting, so that I don't leave it all to TOMOROWO NIGHT!!!! AGHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Bye now!!

knitting in bed

Well I created 6 more blocks from scratch and was done with that part, I nearly sewed all the rows together but I kept having to rip it out and then re-do. So after this happened a second time on another row I opted to walk away and finish the top tommorow night. By then I will hopefully have the energy to press it all flat.

Onward to knitting in bed!

Cute embroidery

You must be drunk if...

we are at a club in Atlanta for my friends graduation party. I had 2 Smirnoff Ice's. They had one bathroom, it was one of those girl/boy bathrooms. Just a toilet and a barley there mirror (you know a girl doesn't own the place).

So I go in and the toilet hasn't benn flushed. It wasnt to nasty just yellow and lots of toilet paper. I personally do not like to use a toilet that has not been flushed. I look the the nob and notice it's not there! So I look on the floor and pick it up and attempt to attach it.

It doesn't work, so ya know, being ME! I lift the top of the toilet, stick my hand straight in the water and flush it, without so much as a second thought. After rinsing my hand off and drying it I then use the restroom, course I still couldn't flush it. I could hear some dudes outside talking "hey man you been waiting long?" Yeah dude, I dunno what she's doing.

So I leave without flushing it again. I dunno what the hell possesed me to lift up the top and put my hand in. I'm sure it was semi clean water but I think had I given my self more then a moment to think about it, I probably would not have stuck my hand in.

I came out of the bathroom and told the husband what I had just done and he just laughed at me and shook his head.

Row Robin - Quilters Forum Garden Web

Your first row with your Theme will be mailed out the day after New Years January 2nd, 2006

Our Row Robin Quilt Swap involves a firm commitment until July 1st 2006 and making a Row every 6 weeks. It is meant to encourage quilters of different skill levels to stretch their creativity and utilize their many talents.

I want everyone who is participating to have fun with this swap and expand your creative thinking! The swap guidelines are specific to ensure that no one is disappointed in the end.

The "rules" are:
- Treat each quilt with respect, keeping it in a clean, dry and safe place.
- Use only 100% quality cotton fabrics – nothing with a loose weave and please use Pre-washed and pressed fabric.
**Please Note**- You will always pass the quilt to the next person on the list following your name. The last person always sends to the first person on the list.*******
- Please be sure you can commit to completing the entire robin, and keep the lines of communication open. Other people are depending on you. If you will be late with a row, please let the hostess know so this information can be passed on. And please remember the GOLDEN RULE OF QUILTING: work on another’s quilt like you would your own!

Theme
We will be doing a mystery block row quilt. You will decide on a theme or colors for your quilt (ex: all purple, stars, gardening, Christmas, etc). The other swappers will decide on the blocks to use, thus the mystery! You will not know what has been made until you get your quilt package back from the last swapper. Please Note: If you can't wait this long you can " agree in advance "that it's ok for folks to post pictures as they add a row *

Rows
We will make rows for a quilt that is either 48" to 60" wide. You decide what the length of rows should be for your top. One swapper may want a top no larger than 48" and another swapper may need their top to be 60". (please note: these are 'finished' row lengths, a 60" top will actually measure 60.5" with the seam allowance ect)You may make your top Vertical or Horizontal Do not attach your row to the previous row. Place your row in the bag with the other rows and pass it on to the next name on the list. The owner will decide what order they want the rows in and if they want to add any additional sashing, rows or borders.

Block Pattern & Size
You will decide each month which block pattern would be best for a quilt as it comes to you. All blocks in a row do not have to be the same pattern or even the same size. Blocks don’t have to be square. Please do not repeat blocks used in a previous row for that quilt. We want you to use your creativity and this is all part of the challenge. Be sure to use whole blocks … no half blocks, please. Keep with the theme of the quilt using your own fabric and any fabrics that may have been mailed. Traditional piecing, paper piecing, or finished applique ( fusible applique is allowed) will all work as long as the blocks stick with the theme.

Mailing Information
There are 5 swappers in each group and only two groups. The deadline to pass the quilt on will be either the 1st of the month or the 15th. The deadline to mail your first row and any theme / background fabrics is January 1st 2005. If you finish a row early, then please send it on. By using this 6 week time frame, you should have your project home by no later than May 30th 2006. When you mail out each package, please use a label and put the next person’s mailing address on the outside of the ziplock bag that contains all the rows! If the package becomes damaged enroute, then the postal people have a name and address to forward it to. If you are mailing in the US please buy a tracking number. If you are mailing the rows to a different country than yours, please make sure the rows are sent airmail. Please be aware that there may be International swappers in your group. The earlier you can get the rows mailed if they are going out of the country the better. Do not mail your rows if you know the person you are mailing to has more than two sets of rows already, please contact your hostess for further infomation. Please post weekly, whenever you mail and receive a package of rows. Communication is vital to the success of this swap!

Mail dates for these rows will be
January 2
February 15th
April 1
May 15th
July 1st

Hard Days Work

Well I sewed a ton of sqaures together and then sewed the rows together. I think I'm going to need to cut some more sqaures because I would like it to be 30x40 and right now its 30x30 or something close to that.

Whoo hoo! Can't believe I got this far already. I stopped by Quilted Hearts to get proper batting however when i got home I realized it said it only shrunk 1% so I am not sure if I should use it or something I already have.

I also bought some yummy green yarn in my pixie purls green... and the Quilts of Valor sqaures came from KnitRider :)

I'll try to post pics of it all later!

Also, color me dumb, but I realized today that this quilt is in my colors! LOL!

I have enough fabric to make two, so I guess I'll save it for a Pixie Jr.

Test Blocks

I *really* want to have another blue or two, but I think I am in a time crunch and the hubby says to suck it up cause it looks good. Here are the 4 blocks. Each row will have two blocks that just alternate up the row. I probably will just repleat the two rows over and over. I think it comes out with a fairly random appreance.

I knit 6 rows on chickami and my thumb told me to stop :(

Sushi finally in the boonies!

On a friday night this place is nearly impossible to get into. All the Atlanta peeps like us who are desprate for something better then a pizza joint.

I love a yummy bowl of sticky rice, miso soup and edimame(sp?). I call it vegetarian sushi :)

WARNING: This may distract you from knitting!

Adorable website from THE KNITRIDER!! one of my best knitting buds!

It's more inches! Can you tell??

Maybe you can see the difference in length. I knit so much last night that I actually ingjured the thumb on my left hand. It has been bothering me all night/day!! So now I feel like I can't knit!! I am such a wimp, and then it hurt when i was quilting cause i have to press down on the quilting ruler so that the rottary blade doesn't shift as I am cutting sqaures. That hurt it worse! MEH! Reminds me of my yoga injury, SAME HAND!

I am in the increases now. I can average 10 rows in any one session now. I am turning into a fast knitter. Not as fast as some, but getting decent! It's funny cause I don't feel as though I go faster.

Isn't the carpet at my work sooo flattering?

Chikami @ night

Slice, Slice, Slice

I spent the majority of the evening yabbing to my friend (whom this quilt is for!) and to my mom, inbetween that I was cutting fabric.

The Actual Quilt

Fabric I Picked Out to Replicate

Tonights Work

They look a tad faded in the natural light, but I think they are a close match. Sadly I could only find one plaid, the real quilt has two plaids and a gingham. I did find the gingham.

So just a few more slices tommorow night and I can start laying it out! I am not sure if I cut enough sqaures, I tend to just sorta do things without thinking, one of the reasons I like quilt making. I don't have to count all my rows, muhahaha! I can just lay them all out, change them as I want, and take away or add more very easily. In that way I view quilting WAY easier then knitting.

So I am missing the strippy blue, and the second plaid. Frustrating! But I went to two fabric stores.. and the only plaid I found was flannel. I have to be careful about the blue so it's not something I can order online. If I get desprate I may try some other place. We will see once it's laid out.

I'm gonna go knit on my chickami for the last hour of the night!

Here we go again!!

So after purchasing that baby fabric online I was very pissed to only recieve half of it in the mail. Hancocks of Padukah or whatever can well... EAT IT! I HATE HATE HATE when websites let me order something that is out of stock, and then don't tell me.

So as it happened I spoke to my friend that very night, and she was telling me about the stuff she registered for, and how she just adores one of the pottery barn kids sets, but her signifigant other thought it was to expensive, she registered for it in the end.

Well as it turns out, it's a quilt!! She will be getting the blue because she is having a boy!

So I thought to myself, I could make that! I could even attempt to applique those white stars on. So I have no idea if she will like this, but that quilt costs $80 bucks, then with shipping and tax it probably comes to $100. I spent about $40 on the fabrics, and I think I will probably have enough to make more then one, or maybe a pillow or something cute. That includes the backing, binding, and I already have batting at home.

I have no idea if she will like it. I'll post pictures of the fabric later tonight. Our air is FINALLY working after a solid week of being in an 86 degree house. I got little to no crafting done this weekend because of it. I of course don't care if she still buys it, so I am hoping I don't offend her in any way by making it.

My big question is how to quilt it, that quilt pattern is so odd, I can't really make it out.

So I have until the 25th to finish this puppy, I better start cutting tonight, lots of tiny 3 inch sqaures!!

Resist. The. Urge. To. Buy

"Charm" in the new Kim Hargraves collection is just to cute.

I think I would make it in the "watery" color. I of course am not allowed to buy it, but a girl can dream.

Today is our FIRST wedding Anniversery!!

1 year ago today my husband and I got married.

Sadly we can not eat our cake, because it was sitting in our parents freezer, and then there was a big storm and the electricity was out for 3 days.

Our first year of marriage has been great, we have made it a solid year with relative ease. I hope he and I will be together 30 years from now on this very same day.

We have one bottle of the white wine that was served (the only alcohal we allowed) but we have decided to save it for our 5th anniversery. We spent the weekend in our house, with a broken air conditioning, and he came into the bedroom while I was knitting, layed out in a pair of cotton undies and a tank top, him in just boxer shorts (87 degree's inside the house to be exact) and he leaned in the doorway and just smiled at me as a knit on my Chickami and said "Here we are, being misrable together" and smiled at me, and I smiled back.

Cute hair thingy

Quilts of Valor

Use your talents to show these brave young men and women how much we appreciate their sacrifice and service with something very American and very tangible: A War-Time Quilt of Valor.

I do not want this war, but I feel for these brave young men and women who have been hurt. This quilt goes to a person who has been wounded and will recieve a purple hart. If everyone creates 2 pieced blocks and sends them to me, I will put them all together into the final QUILT! If I get a big enough responce I will make as many as I can.

Example of the quilt we are going to make:

Illustration of how the blocks come together (4 across):

Size & Cutting Instructions
Cut 2, 6" squares in red
Cut 2, 6" squares in blue

I would reccomend having each of the 4 original cut sqaures be in different fabrics.

Slice these sqaures into triangles and sew together with a quarter inch seam, forming 4 small squares (see yellow highlight on image below). Now sew these 4 sqaures together.

This should create a 10 1/2 inch unfinished square, 10 inches when finished.

It may be easier to try and trim each square to 5 1/2 inches after you sew your triangles together before you sew all 4 smaller squares together, that way you don't cut off any of your points.

Fabric
Needs to be good quality fabric, in "Tone on Tone" colors (No Walmart Fabric's please, Quilts of Valor has a very specific policy on using tightly woven, 100% cotton fabrics).

Examples of good fabrics:

All fabric should be RED or BLUE to keep with a patriotic theme. Fabric should never be both red and blue at the same time or any other combination of colors.

Sample Block
block_sample.jpg

This block was created by Amy from from Garden web, she helped me figure out the directions above! THANKS AMY!!

As you can see she did not use tone on tone fabric for this example (the white dots and white stars). I would prefer the tone on tone look, but it is not a requirment.

Additional Info
www.quiltsforsoldiers.com - more info about "Quilts of Valor".

Once you have completed your block you can email me so I can give you all the mailing information. I think this would be such a fun thing to do, with just a little effort from everyone, combined to make a really sweet big effort!

The final quilt will be 50"X60" and it will be long-arm quilted. I will be handling all the sewing of the strips and providing the batting and backing.

Backing
I found a great red fabric to use for the backing! It's the United States Constitution on red.

constitution.jpg

How Many?
I ask that each person makes 2 blocks. Each block should be created from at least 4 different fabrics’ (2 different blues, 2 different reds). So if for example you could get 2 different blue fat quarters, and 2 different red far quarters you would be able to create the two blocks!

Contact
Once you have completed your block please email me for postage information (pixie AT pixiepurls.com)

Please give me your feedback!

Here is my first go at a design of my sewing site, I pruchased the domain and all that jazz. I would love feedback on the design. First it's the home page, then scroll down to the tutorial/article example. None of it is real content, it's all dummy stuff snagged from various places. I need some REAL tutorial's to put up! INDEED!!

Ahh the good old day

I remember when i first started knitting and blogging, there was about 20 or so good knitting blogs around, now there are hunddreds.

I was so ahead of the times when I started! Heh
But fluffa, blue blog and wendy knits where like.. light years ahead!!

CNN Article

"Knitting blogs are a huge phenomenon. I find it fascinating because knitting and sewing are things that have historically drawn women -- and now men, too -- together in groups to talk about their families, talk about their lives, talk about society. And they would use sewing and knitting and quilting as this way of getting together. I don't think it's any coincidence that knitting is one of the things that drives a lot of people to Web logging and to online communities."

My Secret Sources

Okay well I thought I would make a post about my sources I used to learn to quilt and sew. Several of these places have sewing forums as well.

First there is the Sewing World Commons. They actually have a section devoted to sewing machines and manufacturers, I found atleast 5 other people with the same machine as me and they helped me a lot. They also had good quilting advice.

Another place I love to visit for anything and everything (From Gardening to Knitting) is the quilting forum at "Garden Web".

One that I visit from time to time, more recently to ask about what to do if you forgot to wash your fabric before you sewed something and don't want the colors to run, I went to Block Centrail and they had some good advice involving salt!

A good source of free patterns is the Quilters Cache, and then there is "Quilt Chat" which has a mIRC channel I went in and asked a zillion questions when I first was learning to make that baby quilt.

Then there is Craftster which is just about the coolest place on the web to chat with fellow crafty people.

Those are all the places I like to visit when I have quilting questions.

When I have knitting questions I go to Knitty Forums, Knitters Review Forum, Livejournal Knitting and then Craftster is fun for inspiration.

Offical FO!

I chibby'd in all the ends and added fringe!! Loverly! To bad my camera phone makes it look rather dull. I can't wait to ship it off to mom for her b-day. In other news we purchased our plan tickets via Air Canada for our trip to Nova Scotia in a few months. I CANT WAIT! Anyone know of any good knit/quilt shops near Halifax?!

I found this knit and quilt shop on a google search, woot!

Well I am going to fly to NC in late August for a friend who is having a baby, and of course that's the best time to make a quilt! So I ordered some fabric online that I thought was really cute. She's having a boy.

Once I get it in I think I will probably head to Joanne's or Quilted harts to get the binding/backing and anything else I might need. I MIGHT attempt to make the back in minky!

A very productive evening!

So I am like 99% done with that scarf, so this evening I bite the big one and went for it on my "redwork" modern quilt workshop quilt. I had this weekend gotten a semi-decent pratice swatch of machine quilting:

So then I went for it!!

There are several mess-ups, and the lines should really not be wavy, but go in a circle. I could rip it out, but I might just leave it be and work on the rest of the quilt, and come back to deciding if I should rip it out or not. I actually had to start/stop several times and rip because I had my tension and speed incorrectly. I just sorta press buttons and move stuff till it does it right.

Machine quilting simply takes several attempts to get it right. It's more art then science. It depends on how you push or pull the fabric along, in conjunction with the speed of the machine setting.

This is the back side, the side that I had the most trouble with.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE I did this on my own, I was convinced I neededed to take a class, but that WONDERFUL modern quilt workshop book, and this particular quilt pattern motivated me to go for it! I am sooooo proud and excited!

Click the photo for more pics of the stuff...

Just about done

Wow check that out, I am on the last triangle part of this scarf! I knit on it while watching an hour long video at work (training stuff) and I scored 99% on the test to, all while knitting! HAH!

So this means tonight I can cast off on this one, and work on finishing the pretty blue and green one I am nearly done on as well.

After these two I think I'll pull some of the shirts/sweaters out from last year and see if I can't get something done. I had a tank pattern I was knitting on, the fitz sweater, and my husbands Chamonix sweater as well.

It's Sunday again already?!

Well so I spent saturday at the mall getting my hair done and picking out an item or two of clothing. Then we went to see Charlie & TCF and well I mean while it was cute, I wasn't truley that impressed.

So today (sunday) we went to doggy training class and then came home exhausted. I have a headache I have no idea why! I knit soooooooo much friday, I am nearly done with two multi-directional scarves. Down to the last ball on both.

I resisted the urge to quilt as I wasn't feeling well. So now I have found a differennce between knitting and quilting. I find quilting EASIER.. it's easier to fix mistakes, faster to make things... However it requires more energy and concentration. I can't lie in bed and quilt I guess is what I am getting at. It's not good to quilt when tired, however I can mindlessly knit while tired.

So well, hopefully by next weekend we will have two finished quilts and two finished scarves!! We shall see... Oh AND next weekend is my first wedding anniversery!!

Well I am happy with it atleast

I think it looks kinda odd really, but I wanted a piano key border so I decided to do it even tho I didn't think it really matched the overall quilt.

I worked the last 2 hours cutting and then sewing that whole row, and then attaching it to the side. I also repaired the error before that (I had sewn a whole row of quilt on the wrong way, which wouldn't be noticable at first glance but ruined the neat effect of the quilt design).

I am very happy. I would work longer by my back is starting to hurt from my bad posture! TV time :)

The Silk Quilt

Click the photo to see other pics of my silk quilt in progress.

Once I finish the top I will need to decide on a binding. I am clueless at the moment. I am thinking I will need to use silk for the binding, and possibly the backing to get the look I want. I can't think of any other fabric that will do nice with silk and still look really clean and nice?!

Quilting books came

So okay this book is why i ordered any books to begin with. I am kind of depressed by it however. First off more then 50% of the book has nothing to do with quilts. Not to say her stuff isn't cute, it's just nothing to do with quilts, and the title has the word quilt in it. I suppose a lot of the items have the "quilting" done to them, meaning some stitches used as decorating. But I don't considering that quilting personally unless it's on a real quilted item with batting.

Her designs are superb, but the directions are lacking. Very lacking, in my opinion.

So then this book was one of those deals on amazon, get one and get this one cheaper to. Oh and of course to get the free super saver shipping. THIS book is FANTASTIC, it's to bad the cover didn't look a bit more hip/modern. I love this book, I think it's GREAT! I already have a quilt picked out. It's a neat one that is mainly about quilting and not peicing, where you just make a solid plain old quilt, and using free motion quilting and proper thread colors get a reall neat effect. The perfect project for me to learn free motion quilting without ruining a peiced quilt!
