October 31, 2005

I am being really bad this month!

On a halloween related note, have you checked out the blue blogs beyond wilkd knitted Thing 1 and Thing 2 costumes?? That's a BAD ASS knitter indeed.

So I decided to get some solid sock yarn via the internet, I needed to hit $30 for the free shipping, so I got some extra sock yarn which I think might be the reward for the best photo for the Solid Socks Along.

I also got some of the sock yarn they have that you can dye yourself, and then for only $12 I got the Snowflakes & Arrows Vest by Rowena Lohman. I am doing mine in black and pretty icey blues.

fair_isle.jpg

I also made two stitch markers so far tonight, I am hoping to show you guys tommorow with a GOOD photo!!

Halloween 2005

I don't know why there are white dots on my face, I think it was my husbands camera, or maybe... GHOSTS!!!

I spent Halloween afternoon in a bead shop learning how to create stitch markers, then I came home. I grabbed an old black wig, and the black velour bathrobe the husband had given me last XMAS and BAM I'm a witch! The funny part was when I walked around the front yard with a tiki torch. I got a "COOL FIRE!" comment a few times, and even a "Nice costume!". Hah, yay for last minute creativity!

A not so clear photo of my new beads

the internet is good for the economy

Being fairly pissy with my crap sock yarn I decided to indulge myself in something fancy
trekking_100.gif
It's not solid but I can't let a good knitting internet fad pass me by now can I? I am thinking though I will get some Lorna's Lace one day for solid socks, or maybe some of the Knit Picks cheaper stuff. I need to find a good solid sock yarn that I LIKE!

I also ordered the Magic Loop Booklet so I can learn how to do that tricksy sock knitting stuff.

sock progress

Well I have a nice long sock, and I have turned the heel. Now i am woring on the gussett. It really is rather nasty yarn, however it is easier to knit now on the larger needle.

I don't own much sock yarn, and the only other stuff I got is varieted. I may attempt the koigu next, but first I need to finish my Solid Socks!

Fun Sun Day

Around hte world, beatbox style - You must watch this video, it's amazing!

I frogged the sock (after finishing the heel and finding it was to long some how) and cast right back on. It's far easier to knit now. That yarn should not reccomend a 2.5mm, or maybe I'm a tight knitter. I'm normally on gauge though...

So I sewed the same on my first sweater! Well the shoulder seams... I picked up stitches and took them off holders for the neck. I'm to tired at the moment to knit the 6 inches of ribbing for the neck collar.

WOOT tho I did it, I dunno if I did it right, but it looks right. I have to say doing socks before this was a good idea. I think I have learned how to avoid holes.

Life stuff about me

Well so last night I posted pictures of a big event we had at work. First a little scarey adventure story for you about that.

On the way home I wouldn't say I was tired per say. I mean not like, eyes closing, slap yourself tired. Just sort of tired from the day, it was past 10pm when we left. About 4 miles from my house I stopped at a red light. THere was a police officer behind me. I did not know, it was dark out anways, and it would not have changed anything that I did I don't think.

I was deep in thought, and I continued down the road after the light. Suddenly there was sirens and lights and two cop cars pulled me over. I wondered what I had done wrong.

Well apparently, after I stopped at the red light, I then on auto pilot while deep in thought, just simply went through the light, as tho it has turned green.

I have no memory of this at all. The cop told me I needed "to get my head out of my butt" and pay attention. And said I was lucky he was on his way home and didn't want to deal with a ticket, because he LIKES to write tickets.

I think he didn't give me one cause I think he believed me, and was on his way home. At first he had this flashlight in my face asking me if I was drinking. I was fairly alert really, like I said I wasn't falling asleep or anything. I could kind of tell the point where he chose to believe me, his face went from anger to like.. bewelderment like WTF!

So no ticket for this sad little girl who could have killed herself and possible someone else!! DOH!! I cried a tad when he yelled at me. I hate driving at night. Now I can tell people this story if they try to get me to... I am going to be smart and not drive late!!

So in other news, about my Job. I havn't done much knitting the last 2 or 3 weeks because of work. I worked about 2 or 3, 12 hour weeks this month. I also was dealing with applying for a new job in my company. We have this jacked up un-spoken rule where you have to tell your manager BEFORE you interview for a job you ma not even get! If it's internal I mean... so I had to tell my boss, who wasn't happy because our team has lost one person a month for about 6 months. Loosing me was just going to make it that much worse.

Then I had the interview, then I had to wait over a whole weekend for the offer, and then I accepted before we discussed my raise lol. Luckily that all worked out fine and as I wanted it to.

So then I had to kind of wait to see when my current boss would let me go. I finally have a end date. Nov 11th.

I am excited, it's a promotion for me which I have wanted for about a year now. I am going to be an "Information Architect / Visual Designer". Right now I am more of a "User Interface Designer" which basically means I don't do as much wireframe work as I would like, but I am still active in the usability side of things.

So well I won't bore you much more with all that technical talk, but I am very excited and I know pretty much everyone I am going to work with. I am moving from the IT side, to the Business side. The type of work I do will remain fairly much the same.

So as for knitting... I havn't had the time I have wanted, and I am stuck on several things.

On fitz I need someone to help mee seam it so I can pick up the neck.

On the baby cardi I royalled screwed up the top of the back cause the directions STINK, but I saved it and put it onto some string. I am going to just go ahead and make all the pieces that way until I can find some help.

That solid sock, I think I am knitting on too small a needle, the fabric is very tight. It is the correct needle size, well it said 2.5mm to 3mm, I am using a 2.5mm. So I could go up one needle size. It's a mater of, do I want to frog?? The yarn didn't seem that bad, so I think it's just the needle size.

I hope I get some good knitting done this weekend!!

Heel flap'in Durring Lost

Yup, Crudastic Photo! I gave up on a 7 inch ribby sock, this yarn is narsty!! BLEH!!

Everyone should answer these questions!

In another blog these questions got answered and I thought it would be a fun thing to do as well.

What is your all time favorite yarn to knit with?
Baby Alpaca, hands down (Plymouth Yarns) but it doesn't frog well.

Your favorite needles?
Easy answer, Addi Natura's. I like how light they are. The addi turbo's don't have enough give, seeing as how they arn't wood or bamboo.

The worst thing you've ever knit?
One of the very first things I knit, a bag out of some noro that I felted and turned out horrible, I managed to take a semi flattering photo of it, although it never felted right.

Your most favorite knit pattern?
Phildar Patterns which I can't get in the US very easily, or in english!

Most valuable knitting technique?
Attempt to learn how there are many ways to decrease and increase, and each has it's uses!

Best knit book or magazine?
The Knitters Book of Finishing Techniques

Your favorite knit-a-long?

My Solid Socks KAL of course! Seriously though I think the Harry Potter one at the blue blog (see link in sidebar) is my favorite!

Your favorite knitblogs?
Lordy I must have 50 on bloglines... to many to mention. I like watching blogs that post photo's and mostly talk of knitting. I do like hearing bits of real life stuff, but nothing that is less then 70% knitting.

Your favorite knitwear designer?
Debbie Bliss and Kim Hargraves.

The knit item you wear the most?
My Skinny Multi-Directional Scarf so far...

Tuesday is xbox day

So last night I purchased my husband a cool forgotten relms game on xbox. It even lets you play Dr'izzt (sp?) for one part! I can tell when he talks to himself while playing, that means he's into it, "Awe man! Hell no you don't... Here I come!!! How do you like that??"

I captured a cute pic of the dogs sleeping while he played. We all sat in bed together like this all night. See my cool knitting pillow thingy, better for the back! I got through 2 inches on my first Solid Sock, and I cast on for one side of the baby cardi, and got through the gt st to the st st.

Solid Socks Along

WINNERS!

The requirments of the KAL was to finish a pair of solid socks before the new year, and photograph them creativly.

Jan from Pass the slipped stitch over
I think Jan took this contest very seriously and took a very creative photograph, still life! Her socks are such a pretty pattern and lots of forethought went into them!

socksapril.jpg

Coffee Crazy Knitters April
I love the photo of the socks on the bed. I can imagine April snuggling her feet under the covers feeling all happy cause she made her first pair of socks and her feet are all cozy.

Congratulations April & Jan! Please email me your mailing addresses so I can send you some socky goodness in the mail!

Sorry it took me so long guys, I'm not a very good KAL host.

As Socktober Fest is coming to an end, I decided to start my own Sock Along. Anyone want to join in? Please reply to this entry and I will add your name and post progress updates!!

This particular Sock Along is geared towards anyone knitting solid socks! I am a fan of solid, classic socks. The sock can be in ANY pattern, but the yarn needs to be a solid color. If it is hand dyed and has a very slight fade in color that is acceptable. The end date is new years eve!

Prizes
At the end I will offer a prize to whomever takes the coolest photo of a finished pair of socks, some nice fiber for your stash!

So far there are more then 50 people knitting solid socks, wow!

Here is a tutorial on how to knit 2 socks on 2 circs.

Another lovely photo of the cachsoft. I really look forward to knitting this!

Doggy and Potter Love

That's six bars biz'natch! I got through 27 rows on the plan ride to WA. That was the only time i had energy to knit.

Celebrity Sightings!

The evening in Seattle started like this:

9pm and headed to the airport to catch a red eye to Atlanta (after one yummy glass of wine from the tap house thingy in bellevue).

THe flight was on time but horribly over booked

My manager spotted a man sitting on the floor very close to us. Somehow her "celebrity-radar" new that was the lead singer of train. She very quietly asked him if it was so and he was sweet and said yes, and my name is... whats your name..... etc... Then I popped in and said "I love your band!" like a total dork, he was sweet and smiled.

I then attempted to get a picture of him for proof

However my stupid moto phone cam was FULL and wouldn't fit the picture and he moved!! AHH!! (picture of empty carpet for evidence of celebrity sighting angst!!)

Then I spotted him, so I snagged a photo of him on his gizmo. I am still not sure what kind of device he was starring at the whole dang time.

THen I got brave and asked if I could take a photo of him with me!

He was sooooooo nice! He put his arm around me and then put his head against mine for the photo. My camera first took a crappy one, and then he let me take this one. He even offered to let me take a 3rd cause I was out of most of the frame, but I said no thats great, I don't want to bother you. I thanked him and walked away. I don't think anyone else recognized him.

This is a good picture of the lead singer of train (found via google image search).

So now I know, I am a giddy little school girl when it comes to hot band leader men!! WOOT!! Looks kinda like my hubby (well the hair anyways!!).

So then I picture on the sly took a photo of him waiting for his luggage, as proof that celebrities wait for cruddy luggage too, even if it takes 20 FREAKIN MINUTES!! lol

Oh and I learned a new word in Washington. "That's scetch"

HillTop Yarns - Bellevue Washington

So I went into HillTop, to sad I didn't go into their parent store because it was all rowan. They only had a small amount of the felted tweed, and no books for it. So I was a good girl and didn't buy one skein just to pet. Gotta be conservative (ehem..).

I didn't bring my cell phone so no pics of the store, but of course post-stash pics!

I got some glorious Manos Uruguay for another skinny multi-directional scarf.

It's hard to tell in the photo but its rich blue's from navy to an aqua that is fairly bright, but not to bright, and then some chocolates and almsot kinda burtn goldy colors. There is even a tad of forest green in it. It's kettle dyed #110.

A baby book I have wanted for a while, Classic Babies (Book Four)

It's hard to tell from the photo but I got some adorable baby teal in the Classic Yarns CashSoft DK.

So I can make this for my sister who is prego:

I figured baby teal wasn't to male or female centric.

I really liked HillTop yarns, but I do feel that are a tad overpriced. With that said, they carried wonderful yarns and all kinds of high scale unique items.

Bellevue Washington

(FYI I know my spelling is jacked up but its' technically 2 am east coast my neck and back hurt and i have no energy to even slightly improve my spelling!!)

The company I work for, their logo is on this wall. Can you guess which one? :)

We are staying at the Red Lion in. It's not the snazzies hotel ever, but I really like it. The beds are superb and just beyond comofortable. You get 4 fluffy white pillows on each bed!

One of our "clients" saw my muli-directional scarf, the colorful skinny one. Well turns out she knows how to knit to and we talk about knitting a bit and she kinds of mentions there is a yarn store around the corner. I didn't think anything of it, thinking I wouldn't have time to go and it was probably to far.

So later that day another one of the clients and my manager want to take a walk and we get to talking about knitting and I repeat that there is supposed to be one close by, and they say okay well lets walk around the block (they had wanted to walk around the block anyways) and wouldn't you know, RIGHT THERE is a freakin yarn shop, attached to the same freakin block we are on!! OMG!! Here is the parent store, at the top of the page you can see it says they now have a location in the East. That is the one we went into.

We didn't have time for me to shop, but omg they have Rowan Felted Tweed, which I have never seen in person before! It just FEELS like harry potter sweaters lol (or weasley sweaters actually). Oh I can't wait to go back tommorow durring lunch to SPEND MONAY!!! YA YA!! lol

So tommorow night we leave back for Atlanta, I'll try to take pics at the yarn store tommorow and maybe some cool pictures of work.

A finished sock!!

I used the incorrect version of Kitchener (sp?) stitch, I used the bind off version instead of the toe version. I'm not sure, for some reason that book has two parts on it. I am still a tad confuzzled about it!

REGARDLESS it's a finished SOCK! And this means I can get to hard work on HP this week while in Seatle!! Wish me luck on my trip!

October 13, 2005

Mini Me

I went to a fun knit-together at Quilted Hearts Ltd which was a fun stress reliever. It's been such a loooooooooooooooooong week at work, and next week will be longer still. However next week I will make MASSIVE progress on my HP scarf because I will be spending each evening alone in a hotel room in Seatle.

So while at the shop II stocked up on a few skeins of Baby Ul and a Skakel mini sock pattern. I plan on making a sock/hat set for atleast 1 baby. I think I need to make 2 sets however. There is a lady at work who is pregnant, and then my co-workers wife is pregnant. Not to mention my SISTER is pregnant. Lots of knitting to do :)

Lets hope this sock goes WELL!! Who doesn't love Dale yarns?!?

October 12, 2005

Toby says, "It's the last sleeve!"

I finished that first sleeve last night, and cast on tonight for the next. I am almost to the end of the ribbing, then onward to an endless sea of st st. Who knows, I could be seaming by sunday!

I am feeling headachy for girlish reasons this evening and can't seem to do much of anything but lay in bed and moan at my husband. Tonight is a wash.

October 11, 2005

My List

So I decided to have a reality check and make note of what I am currently and activley working on. Any random scarfs I started or even socks don't count as they are basically learning items and don't have to be finished!

Fitzgerald

Sence that picture I had nearly finished that sleeve, and had one more sleeve yet to do. Then I can seam and pick up for the neck. I may or may not pick Fitz back up before the Harry Potter scarf is done. However with my latest sock experimentation I have successfully picked up stitches which was good practice for Fitz.

Harry Potter Scarf

This is marrily on it's way and being worked on atleast every other night.

Turtle Toy
Last night I finished the underbelly, so now I just need to finish all the feet/head/tail and I can seam and be done! I would like to finish this one soon as it is a smaller project and shouldn't take to much longer.

On the back burner I have Dale Chamonix which I barely started last year.

After all the HP stockinette I think this project will go by quickly. I am just not allowed to touch that yarn just yet!

I also have the yarn for many other projects, but I won't worry about all that till others are finished!

Last night I ordered some Brilla so I could knit a Ribbed Silk Corset which I had gotten a long time ago.
114.jpg
Color: 114
58% Viscose, 42% Cotton, 121 yds
22 st = 4in or 10cm, US # 6 or 4.0 mm

I won't be allowed to start that for a while yet!

PS. I don't really hate socks, I just hate not being able to do something correctly!
PSS. No I never found out who came to my door sunday night.

I HATE SOCKS

Did I mention I hate socks??

.
.
.

Okay I don't hate them, I just feel like A FREAKING IDIOT for not being able to figure it out on my own!!

Depeche Mode - Precious

Precious and fragile things
Need special handling
My God what have we done to You?

We always try to share
The tenderest of care
Now look what we have put You through

Things get damaged
Things get broken
I thought we'd manage
But words left unspoken
Left us so brittle
There was so little left to give

I highly reccomend downloading the new single off itunes. Download the song here.

WTF

I am sitting in bed happily working on the heel flap of my first sock ever, when the doorbell rings, it's like 8:40 at night!

THe dogs freak out barking and willow jumps the baby gate. I was glad, i let toby over the gate as well. They had a fit at the front door. Not to scarey I don't think but better then silence for chicken shit me.

It was a truck, the kind with the open bed in the back, pulled up in the driveway with the lights on.

I never saw a person or persons so I have no idea who it was. I don't see anything on the front door nob but I am to chicken to open the door.

I have no idea why anyone would come at night to my door. WHY is it always on the nights when my husband is out? He is really rarely ever out. It seems everytime he is someone comes to the door and freaks me out. I never answer it.

I am sitting here in my bathrob with a small knife in one pocket and my cell phone in the other. I don't think I'll be able to relax till the hubby gets home. I wish he would hurry.

Janis's Koigu Sock Pattern

Copyright 2001 by Janis Cortese. If you reproduce this in any way, or in any medium, please keep this copyright notice intact.

Janis's Koigu Sock Pattern

I'm a size 8.½ and have a vaguely narrow-to-medium foot. This sock fits me great, and I love it. Koigu is a standard sock-weight yarn that can be purchased at http://www.patternworks.com/. It's a bit pricey, though; I sort of splurged for myself when I got it. It's merino, so it's nice and soft. I recommend knitting in a strand of #20 crochet cotton in the toe for reinforcement.

Lately, I've found myself altering this pattern slightly. I've been continuing the ribbing over the instep and doing a 50-rnd cuff instead of the 35-rnd one specified in the pattern. The ribbed instep just fits very well and feels great, and the longer ribbing is nice to tuck under your jeans (or fold over if you wish).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Materials:

2 skeins of Koigu yarn (50g, 176yds per skein, and you'll have some left over)
4 #2 double pointed needles
a yarn needle

Sock Leg:
Cast 24 stitches on each of three dpn's for a total of 72 stitches. Knit 35 rounds of k2-p2 ribbing, 50 rnds if you like a longer cuff.

Knit the next 18 stitches and slip them to the first dpn. Rearrange the stitches such that there are 36 on the first dpn, and 18 each on the other two.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Heel Flap:
WS: Slip the first stitch only, then p across. RS: (S1, k1) across. Repeat these two rows 18 times total across 36 heel stitches. Leave the two instep needles untouched.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Turn Heel:
WS: S1, p22, p2tog, p1. Turn.
RS: S1, k11, ssk, k1. Turn.
WS: S1, p12, p2tog, p1. Turn.
RS: S1, k13, ssk, k1. Turn.
Continue in this vein, working one more stitch each row before turning until you've finished up with a RS row and have 24 stitches on the heel needle.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gussett:
Pick up 20 stitches along the side of the heel flap and slip them to the first needle. Knit the stitches from the next two needles onto the second needle. Maintain the ribbing pattern over these two needles if you want the ribbing to continue over your instep. Pick up 20 stitches from the other side of the heel flap onto the third needle and knit 12 heel stitches onto this needle. The round now begins in the center of the heel. 100 stitches.

First round: Knit along the first needle to the last three stitches. K2tog, k1. Knit across the second needle, maintaining ribbing pattern if desired. On third needle, k1, ssk, k across. Second round: Knit even, maintaining ribbing over instep if desired.

Repeat these two rounds until you're back to 18 stitches on the first and third needle, 36 on the second.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Foot:
Knit around even until you are at the first knuckle of your big toe (the one where bunions form). That's 27 rounds for me, and I wear a size 8½. Maintain ribbing over instep if desired.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Toe Decreases:
First round, first needle: Knit to last 3 stitches, then k2tog, k1. Second needle: k1, ssk, k across to last 3 stitches, k2tog, k1. Third needle: k1, ssk, k to end. Second round: knit even. FWIW, I've never continued the ribbing over the toe.

Repeat these two rounds until 22 stitches remain on the second needle. Knit the first round three times with no even round between until 16 stitches remain on second needle. Knit the 8 stitches on the first needle and slip them to the third. Cut the yarn and leave about a foot or so of it hanging to graft the stitches closed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Graft Toe Closed:
There's a fantastic page up at http://www.pcola.gulf.net/~enp/sockpage/lessons/lessons.html that has great directions and pictures showing each step to grafting stitches together. Follow these directions and your sock-toes will be the envy of all who witness your feet.

What in the hell is wrong with our country?!

You have got to be kidding me:

Southwest Airlines kicked a woman off one of its flights over a political message on her T-shirt, the airline confirmed Thursday, and published reports say the passenger will sue.

Lorrie Heasley, of Woodland, Wash., was asked to leave her flight from Los Angeles to Portland, Ore., Tuesday for wearing a T-shirt with pictures of President Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and a phrase similar to the popular film title "Meet the Fockers."

FO - the other half

Here is the second glove in action, adjusted with a rib pattern. The gusset still has a slight hole. I'm going to keep trying to figure it out, and shorten the length of the cuff. Also I'm going to go down a needle size. The next pair I attempt will be in gray and hopefully will match and can be gifted.

I used this one today at work :)

Tired

When stressed, spend money

seeing as how i am very stressed, and the last time i was this stressed i got very sick, i am trying to keep it happy and light.

So I spent MORE money today. Shhh don't tell my husband! I read the Sweet Georgia blog and actually bought some of her yarn. I thought stripped socks sounded fun, because I don't like mottled socks!! So i got the second version of it. It's fairly close to pixie colors (speaking of that, I need to re-design this blog sense i updated to the new MT and lost my template).

Sweet Georgia's Handpainted Sock Yarn RIVER (Stripping)

100% Merino Wool is handpainted in vibrant colours with WashFast Acid Dyes. Approximately 400 yards of fingering/sport weight yarn. Recommended needle size is 1-3 US to give 7-8 sts/in. Handwash separately. This one skein will make a pair of women's socks.

So I will be at work till 9 or 10 tonight. 12 hour days RULE!! For a living I do Information Architecture and Human Centered Design, so today we are testing out applications on cell phones, with randomly selected real life users. It's really neat/fun stuff to do, but the hours this time are fairly laborouse (is that a word?). I also have to fly to Seatle in another week or so (I can't even remember).

I spilt a gigantic glass of sweat tea in our lab, near some very expensive equipment. Then I knocked my lip really hard with the big headphones when i took them off.

I am just trying to laugh and keep it fun as I can manage.

knitting? I finished the glove last night! I'm still not happy with it, so I am going to continue to change the pattern and make it my own until I am happy. It was a lot better though, just still had some holes on the inside of the gusett.

Something strang is afoot @ the circle k

A man and a women pulled up, the walked past each other and swapped cash (I saw it) and he continued on into the shopping center, and she got in her car and left.

It was very odd.

Dinner and Wine

We had the inlaws over to celebrate a birthday. We toasted with the Nova Scotian Rose'. It was simply delicious. I havn't really drunk Rose' before but it reminds me of champaign and tastes marvalouse with strawberries!!

I always have to have fresh flowers when we have people over. Just makes things happy and sweet.

So now I am going to go knit on my HP scarf (3rd bar baby!) while half drunk , watching my husband play the Legend of Zela on his XBOX (with the puppies curled up next to me of course).

I am excited fall is coming (it's not chilly here just yet down south) so we can sit outside with the firepit and roast marshmellows!!

Yarn!

I was on bloglines, and Knit & Tonic linked to a great Merino Wool that is $8 a skein (197 yards) which I think is a good price, and she said its great to knit with. She's a fun blog to read, she's a flawed knitter to, but one of those amazing ones who finishes stuff a lot and we love to oogle over and adore :)
