Stockinette or Garter for Birch?

My Birch kit arrived and I see there are two versions of this shawl and the book does not in anyway shape or form attempt to show you the difference. Anyone have an example or thoughts?

Getting to know the yarn:
Lace Cast On
Yikes, the clover circs I got suck cause the tips arn't nearly sharp enough. I grabbed some small crystal palace straights so I could atleast practice a bit. I hate how I always gotta buy new needles!! I think I love this yarn, but I think it will be a pain to frog. I adore the color, even if it's not what I thought I was buying.

"Trance" colour:
Kidsilk Haze
It's a bit brighter/shinier in this photo because of the flash but it's fairly accurate in color. In my houses night time lighting it's just a bit more faded then this.

My first attempt at a lace cast on:

It's a neat trick and there is a way to go about it and not be too slow.

I like using Inox circs with that fiddly yarn. They have a nice point for lace.

I agree, the pictures are really hopeless. I have made two stockinette Birches, but plan to make a garter stich version soon. But I'm afraid I can't show you the pictures you asked about because I haven't started it yet.

Love that KSH and someday I might actually knit my Birch. What a gorgeous color you picked. Anyway, I agonized over that whole garter/stockinette thing myself way back when I started Birch. Use the google search on my blog.. or check July 2005 ... I wound up with the stockinette version. I just checked and there are pictures early on in the game of both garter & stockinette in early July.

Hey pixie! Your photos look the most colour accurate of all the ones I've seen so far! You're right about lace cast on being s-l-o-w. For needles, there was some discussion on WendyKnits about needles for lace -- it caused me to run out and buy a set of Boye circs for Birch. They worked quite well -- nice pointy tips, powdery finish on the needles didn't cause the yarn to stick (or slip) too much.

I wound up with some Bryspun's! I like how they are slightly bendable.. we'll see if I like 'em better then Natura's!

Whee! I started on Kiri with my Kid Seta of bright colors and I'm using...hm. I don't know what needles I'm using. I started on Boye in US7 and then cranked it down to something metal in a US2. I just tinked 4 rows, so much luck to you.
