Ashford Joy

Ashford Joy

Whats this? Do you know what it is? It's my new baby. It's my "Joy Ashford". I was freaking out for the last 7 days waiting on this to get to my doorstep. It arrived yesterday in a fancy box.

Ashford Joy

It's a Double Treadle with Scotch Tension, but best of all it's a "true" double treadle and I don't get dead spots where the wheel gets stuck. (Note the doggy nose!)

Here is a close up of the tension nob and the drive band. It has springs on both sides, and it runs over the bobbin.

Here she is in her natural habitat. I always felt my lendrum was a boy, but this one is most certainly a girl. The Joy is named after the actual "Joy Ashford" who is the mother of one of the Ashford guys.

Mini Review:
So far so good, I like how the flyer has to come off to put a bobbin on, sure it's a bit of a pain but it's on so nice and securely it just feels very stable and well put together. I like how short it is, I'm not a tall women and this is the perfect height to sit on my couch and spin. It's light as a feather and easy to carry with the nifty handle.

It came with great directions on how to set it up. I have yet to try plying on it but I love the onboard Lazy Kate, it even says you can ply off of it. I always thought it was just for bobbin storage.

Here is the very first thing I spun on it. Luxe Merino Top Superwash from Knitch. I attempted to spin a worsted weight single. I am very pleased with it!

I plan on selling my Lendrum locally. No need for 2 portable wheels. I feel like this one is a lot more portable, however including the bag it was a lot more money. Oh and for those who want to know, I got it from the Copper Moose with 2 extra bobbins, maintance kit and shipping, all for no charge.

She's just gorgeous! very cool - she looks VERY portable! =) I know she sorta has a name already, but are you going to name her?
LoveJoy or something equally cheesy? I totally would - LOL

Beautiful. I have had the pleasure to test drive one of them and they spin very nicely. I have a Ashford Traveller, but I wish I had an Ashford Joy.

Enjoy your new wheel :).

mostly I like to say "Happy Happy Joy Joy" when i refer to her lol

I know you are away...but I really have to say...WOW...not only are you using a new tool, but venturing into the world of color so brightly and beautifully...and a single!
Luvin it.

The Joy was the first wheel I ever spun on and while I liked it alot, it was too short for me. So glad to hear that you love yours! Congratulations :o)

Where do you get your fibers to spin?

Yay!! I love my (ST) joy... perfect for me. Good luck with your new girl! :)

I am a beginning knitter, and my almost ten-year old daughter knits, crochets and is saving for a spinning wheel. I found your blog when I typed "Ashford Joy double treadle" into Google. I'm hoping you'll allow me to leave comments and questions. I'm seeking inpsiration and advice for both myself and my daughter with our future fiber fun. - Kate

Woohoo! Congrats on your new wheel!

Congratulations! I bought my wheel (a Kromski Minstrel) from the same place, and I love it. I was at a fiber festival this weekend and was eyeing someone spinning with the Joy, and it looked like a dream! I am also kind of short, but worried that it would even be too small for me-- so let me know how you like it! Not that I *need* a second wheel, mind you...! :-)

Again, congrats on your new baby!

Congrats, indeed, on your new baby!
The very first time I spun on a wheel was at the LYS a couple of nights ago.
One of the fellow knitters had her Joy and it was the first time I'd seen one in person. (After drooling on my keyboard looking at pictures online for months.)
When I finally did see it up close and personal, I knew that this is the wheel that I want. No fussy neo-faux "colonial" looking wheel for me.
And it's the perfect size for an apartment-dweller.
She's bringing it to the shop next weekend and will let me "test drive" it.
I. Can't. Wait.
Now...all I need to do is get a Sugar Daddy.
; )
Again, congrats!

By the way, the woman at the LYS who was spinning on a Joy is taller than me.
I'm 6'2" tall. She's a 6'3" BBW. (Big Beautiful Woman)
She didn't have any problems with it at all.
; )
