Little Pumpkin, Big Pumpkin

So I have been determined that we would get some cute photos of the baby with her pumpkin hat on at a pumpkin patch. I figured we would find some small little farm and get some cute photos. It turned out I had joined some various meetup.com and yahoo groups recently for stay at home moms and for "baby wearing" so I could hopefully A) Meet some people and get out durring the week and B) Learn how to use my stupid "peanut shell" properly, which is a baby sling so you can "wear" your baby. In history baby wearing was pretty common place and still in under developed countries that don't have strollers you get a lot of baby wearing. Babies normally like it more too, and they tend to sleep more often.

Well so it turned out the baby wearing group was meeting at a pumpkin patch yesterday. I just didn't realize it was THE pumpkin patch. I think there was around 300 people there, maybe more! I was overwelmed personally, and totally freaking out because the baby wearing group had like 4 other little kids of toddler age all running around and screaming. Baby Girl wasn't having her best day ever, she was very gasy. Which sucks because the day before she had like a perfect day which would have been great for picture taking! So we went and I was overwelmed, and she was gasy. Great combo! The husbeast came through and helped keep things calm. The baby wearing group showed us a few tricks, and she liked the Moby Wrap (which incidently makes it so you can wear your baby while doing yoga lol) so I ordered one, but we left the group as soon as possible. One of the dads with a toddler son whose diaper he had just changed decided to "lean" on our stroller and i just stood there starring at his hand on the stroller, and then the kids started trying to play with the stroller, icky icky fingers!

Okay ya'll might think I'm nuts now, well my friend who has a 6 month old still makes me use hand sanitizer before I pick up her daughter, and I'm still in "new mommmy" terrirtory and on top of that she's not vaccianted yet, so lets not stick her in a crown of 300 people and then let a bunch of kids touch her stroller shall we? Husbeats held her durring all this so she wasn't getting touched or anything which was good. I should have gotten photos of this BEUTIFUL 5 month old MINATURE Australian Shepard, I had no idea they made mini ones. This dog was so pretty and had the most pretty clear blue eyes ever. DH was in love and played with her for a bit and we chatted with her owner a very nice older man.

So yeah give me 3 more weeks and I'll freak out a heck of a lot less, I just had no idea that place was going to be so busy. Well Baby Girl was hungry so we found an empty patch of grass and a tree and I sat under it a fed her, and I have to say that was very relaxing and fun. It was beutiful out and it was so fun to breastfeed and not have it hurt, but instead be enjoyable. It was soooo pretty out, did I mention that?? Husbeast snapped some pics on his camera phone. I'm sad it's going to get so cold and I won't get to breastfeed her outside much soon, and then when it does get warm I'll be going back to work and not breastfeeding anymore.

So it was way to crowded to actually buy a pumpkin so we didn't, but we got pics of her by the pumpkins and some video with our camcorder. I just looved going as a child and so I wanted her first Holiday to be special and us to have cute pics!

Here is the thing about Baby Girl, she HATES having anything on her head! So I don't think I'll be knitting anymore hats for her sadly, but she's going to have to suck it up once it gets much colder. I bought her some cloths with hoods which she seems to mind less, and a cute bunting which also has a hood. She doesn't mind at all what clothing I put on her, but the hats, she hates! So the pumpkin hat fit perfectly, and I'm extra happy with it, it's an Ann Norling pattern I picked up at my LYS. I highly reccomend it. Maybe she'll get over her hat issues in a few months, one can hope!

My 9 month old son doesn't like anything on his head either. He pulls off baseball caps, he pulls off knitted ones, and he doesn't like the "hospital" type hat that I put on him after a bath (it's getting colder here in Canada). He's old enough to know how to take things off himself now, and it is not good. Maybe I should knit flaps and put velcro on his knitted hats so he can't take it off!

Your little one is too cute.

Good for you for nursing in public and wearing your baby. I used a sling with my two and never used a stroller until they were toddler-ish and I needed them "tied in" for certain places.

You'll get past the new "mommy-ish" stuff. They start eating dirt and fuzz as soon as they start scooting around. Nothing to worry about.

I'm glad you stuck with the breastfeeding. Have you tried to lessen your dairy intake? Sometimes that can make babies be gassy...sometimes it is wheat that the mom eats too. Eliminiation diet is great to try for this. It takes 2 weeks of the being out of your system before you'd notice a difference though.

is that the pumpkin patch up near amicalola falls? we drove by one up there while on vacation last week, it had HUGE pumpkins all over the place.

people can be so gross without even realizing it. i'm not a mommy OR ocd, and i still get weirded out by strange people touching my things with dirty hands.

I looooooove the pic you feeding S - you look so happy and relaxed about it all. And isn't it _amazing_ to be able to feed just anywhere - no need to worry about organising bottles or anything. I know breastfeeding can be really tough to get established, but once you're there the benefits are wonderful.

I remember being terrified of galumphing great toddlers when Adam was tiny - hey, even 4-month-olds looked pretty scarey big. And as she gets bigger and more robust, and she's had her jabs, you'll get more comfortable around other children - although diaper hands on your stroller - ick!

I remember those "freaking out" days very well. Just try to remember that one of these days (not too terribly long from now) precious Sydney is going to be one of those spirited toddlers with icky fingers. (it happens much quicker than any of us want it to, believe me) She looks so cute in her pumpkin hat, I don't think any of my kiddos would keep a hat on for long either. Cool about the baby wrap thing, hope you get lots of use out of it.

Awww the pumpkin hat is too cute. And this is little late but congrats on the birth of your little girl, she is beautiful!!

Why stop b/f'ing when you go back to work? Working and b/fing are compatible; it just takes a little extra preparation. You look beautiful, BTW!

She is so adorable! Cute hat on her. Glad you were able to get out and enjoy some family time in the sun!

I had to laugh when I read about you freaking out with all the toddlers running around with germs! I was exactly the same way for the first 6 months. With all my cleanliness, she still got a couple of colds and all the normal stuff kids get. I would definitely be wary until she gets her shots for sure!

My daughter hated hats too. Even in the winter. I put them on when absolutely necessary, but left her alone most of the time. Good thing I wasn't into knitting back then!

Oh it seems like a lovely time despite the crowds and I have never seen a cuter pumpkin baby!

I can see how all those people would have been overwhelming, no doubt! Sydney looks adorable in her hat though, and the pics of you two made the trip worthwhile *s*

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think you sound crazy AT ALL - the icky diaper fingers would have left the same impression on me.

She looks so sweet in her pumpkin hat. What a nice day for an outing! :)

The moby wrap looks awesome and certainly costs less than the sling I bought.

I ADORE that pumpkin hat on your baby girl. You should sell them, I would buy one!

Don't you just love this time of year? I love fall. Kudos on getting out there with your little one and meeting new people. I wish I was equally gutsy.

I'm with you on the germ aversion though. I'm definitely not usually so particular about people washing their hands before holding my 5-month-old, but when little kids are around her with their runny noses and dirty hands, I can't help but start to feel a little squeamish.

I noticed somewhere on your blog that you use the Clover Mini Circ Knitting Needles..do you still use them, and where did you find them...I love these needles.....your baby is the cutest!

Blogless Diane

Glad you braved it at Burt's and we could help you find a carrier that works for you! I love my Moby. :) It was so nice to meet your beautiful family.

The surest way to keep your daughter healthy is to *continue breastfeeding* when you go back to work. She'll need the antibodies in your milk to fight off all the germs/viruses you'll inevitably bring home from the workplace.

I breastfed 100% while working F/T, and it's hard work that is SO worth the effort. It's also comforting for mama & baby to leave the very best nourishment with her. I'd be glad to lend support if you need it. Or try the local La Leche League.

If she'll be at daycare, she'll be directly contacting many times more germs than a daddy's hands touching the stroller (fwiw, that daddy's 2nd baby is just hours older than Pixie's LO and he wouldn't put dirty hands on anybody's things :-) ). Daycare is *full* of sticky, runny-nosed kids. A little exposure to other people now will help her strengthen her immune system for later... :)

Hope to see you again soon!
